Character Name: Asbel Lhant
Series: Tales of Graces F
Canon Point: Post Adult Arc
Summary/History:
ToG Plot @ Wikipedia
ToG @ Aselia
Asbel @ Aselia
Personality:
As the eldest son of the affluent Lord Aston and his wife, Asbel was always destined to someday rule the Lhant territory. Aston was a stern and uncompromising man whose personality contrasted strongly with his young son. Asbel, being a boisterous and headstrong child, saw his father as a grouchy and controlling old man and frequently sought to disobey Aston every time he could. Even though the two could rarely see eye to eye on anything Asbel still loved and respected his father to the point where he later recalls the lessons his father taught him on the importance of respect and friendship. He feels a measure of guilt for not being at his father’s side when Aston died defending their homeland from a Fendelian invasion and regrets being unable to repair their relationship.

Asbel would often drag his younger brother Hubert, his best friend Cheria and later even the crown prince, Richard, into his mischief. They looked up to him because he was brave, strong and honest which made Asbel a little arrogant. He would ignore their warnings and pleas to turn back when things got dangerous because of his childish belief that he was strong enough to protect everyone. This later backfired on him when a beloved friend died trying to protect him. That event changed everything for Asbel. His childhood had been shattered and was worsened when he learned that Hubert had been adopted into a noble family in Stratha.

After running away to the Knight Academy in Barona, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to becoming someone who can “protect everyone”. Over the seven years that followed Asbel changed drastically; his training tempered his rebellious and arrogant nature and he became a diligent, polite and helpful young man while maintaining some of the fiery spirit from his youth as well as his resolve to never give up. This attitude earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and instructors, especially the girls.

However, Asbel can be painfully oblivious. During his time at the Knight Academy he garnered the attentions of a fair number of the female knight aspirants but he was clueless to the affection they had for him or simply thought the girls were just being very friendly. Flirting often goes straight over his head and his sense of honor would never allow him to think of a woman in a promiscuous way. His oblivious nature is most evident in his interactions with Cheria, where he hardly notices her affections. Although her feelings for him are obvious to everyone but Asbel himself, he does have a soft spot for Cheria and couldn’t stand to see her hurt. He is also easily flustered when he does end up in a potentially romantic situation since he has no experience with the subject.

Asbel is quite idealistic. His intentions and reasons for becoming stronger, as noble as they are, are looked down on by Hubert who believes he is being foolish and to a lesser extent by Malik who believes Asbel’s ideals will only lead to disappointment when he faces the harsh realities of knighthood and life in general. Asbel takes all this in stride and simply strives to do the best he can for the people who depend on him, even withdrawing from the Knight’s Academy in order to assume the title of Lhant’s lord.

His upbringing as part of the Windor nobility in one of the kingdom’s wealthiest provinces has left him somewhat unaware of the plight of the lower classes as well as the poor economic state in neighboring countries. He is stunned when he comes face to face with the poverty in Fendel and begins to understand why Fendel is constantly at war with Lhant. Asbel even takes it upon himself to help the locals gather Cryas, even though the task requires hunting dangerous beasts.

Friendship is undoubtedly the most important thing to Asbel. While his kind nature often sees him helping complete strangers out of the goodness of his heart, he would go to extreme lengths to help his friends. Asbel thinks highly of all his friends to the point where one would think he is blindly loyal to them. This is partly true as he will not tolerate anyone even talking badly about them. This mindset makes him easily manipulated as shown when Richard had Asbel follow him on his conquest of Windor. Despite Richard’s strange and violent conduct, Asbel refused to see anything seriously wrong with his friend’s behavior and brushes off Cheria’s concerns on the subject.

It should be noted that Asbel does not hold grudges or openly seek conflict despite seeking to become stronger. He is a pacifist by nature and will only draw his blade when he feels that he has good reason to. Asbel even refuses to fight Richard until he knows his friend’s motives. He is quite forgiving and helps the people of Fendel even though they are the ones who killed his father.

Despite his often carefree appearance, Asbel is not without his share of concerns. He is always worried about the welfare of others and about what they think of him. He holds his friends’ opinions of him in the highest regard and is upset when he feels like he has failed them in one way or another. Asbel takes personal failure poorly and it will weigh heavily on his thoughts. He rarely shares his true feelings with his friends, as he feels they wouldn’t understand. Truly Asbel shoulders all burdens himself, including the burdens of others. He wants to be depended on by others but refuses to depend on anyone himself, feeling that it is the best way for him to take responsibility for his actions.

In the end, Asbel is still just an easygoing young man with a simple desire to see a world free from conflict. Even though he often hides his true feelings, Asbel is a genuinely kind and honest person who would never refuse anyone help if they asked for it. He is steadfast in his duty and honorable in conduct, using his strength and skill to protect.

Powers/Abilities:
Asbel is an extremely skilled swordsman. At the age of 11 he was able to best the Prince’s personal sword training teacher twice, with a wooden sword, even when the man was using a real weapon. His training at the Knight Academy has refined his swordsmanship significantly.

He is proficient in two fighting styles:

Sheathed Blade Artes is Asbel’s preliminary sword form. He fights using a series of kicks, dodges, and strikes with the sheath of his sword. He rarely draws his blade when fighting this way and it is Asbel’s method of taking down his opponents without causing them severe bodily harm.

The Drawn Blade Burst style is Asbel’s primary sword style, where he fights with his weapon unsheathed and uses a multitude of attack Artes. He is able to strike faster and face down multiple opponents at once as a result.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
• Asbel is an extremely skilled swordsman. At the age of 11 he was able to best the Prince’s personal sword training teacher twice, with a wooden sword, even when the man was using a real weapon. His training at the Knight Academy have refined his swordsmanship significantly.

He is proficient in two fighting styles:

Sheathed Blade Artes is Asbel’s preliminary sword form. He fights using a series of kicks and dodges, and strikes opponents with the sheath of his sword. He rarely draws his blade when fighting this way and is Asbel’s way of humanely taking down his opponents. This can prove fatal if he’s underestimated his opponent as it’s easy for him to overextend his attacks.

The Drawn Blade Burst style is Asbel’s primary sword style, where he fights with his weapon unsheathed and uses a multitude of attack Artes. He is able to strike faster and face down multiple opponents at once as a result.

• Asbel desire to help people makes him somewhat easy to take advantage of. Coupled with his naïveté it makes him easier to fool. While he will realize a plot if it’s evident, he is genuinely too trusting which can be used against him.
• Asbel is very resourceful, able to come up with plans fairly quickly even in the middle of a fight. He has been educated on strategy and battle tactics while at the Knight Academy and is able to coordinate with others if he must.
• While he is not unfamiliar with magic, Asbel doesn’t truly understand how to use it and is therefore somewhat vulnerable to it.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Asbel is extremely fond of ice pops and his favorite foods are curries.

[ Sample ] :

Asbel dashed from street to street, following the creature’s trail of destruction. It had been less than a day since the monster had appeared in Vatheon and it had already caused significant destruction to the city.

As he turned into another street, his thoughts wandered to his friends. The others had been with him when this had started but between the attacking creature and the panicking crowds, Asbel had lost sight of Sophie and the others. Moments before the alarmed mob had overtaken them, he’d managed to catch sight of Hubert pointing and shouting to him but there was too much noise to hear what was said. Not knowing whether they were safe or not gnawed at his thoughts. What if someone had been hurt? Why wasn’t he paying more attention?

“Hubert will keep everyone safe.” He told himself.
He needed to believe that, so he could focus on what he had to do. Asbel stumbled into the middle of the road, directly in the path of the monster. The beast was at least twice as big as the houses it strode through. Like before, there were people fleeing from it in terror and Asbel had to force his way through the tide to get closer to the creature.

There was a deafening crack as a burst of energy detonated behind the monster’s head. The beast fell, immense arms reached out to slow its rapid decent, crushing the houses beneath it.

Now was his chance.

Asbel knew if he could strike at the head he could stop the creature. His hand went for his sword before he heard something above the din. There was someone screaming for help. Through the dust Asbel caught sight of the source: a man trapped beneath the rubble. Asbel glanced at the creature, then to the injured man. He could kill the creature, but its body would in turn crush the man.

His hand dropped from the sword’s hilt as he ran toward the trapped man. He shoved the rubble off of the victim, cutting is hands on the rough surface.

“Hang on, I’m going to get you out of here, okay?”
